Have you ever seen something terrible about to happen, and yelled \"Heads Up\" or \"Look Out\", etc only to have the person/group your yelling at look up just in time to get whacked on the head?? Lately, that\'s alot like how I feel about my currenet employment situation.
I used to really like my job...really like it. Just like any other job, it had its pitfalls and bad day, but over all, I enjoyed coming to work. As of late however, its getting harder and harder for me to get up in the morning to come to work only to watch our team get hit in the head with another blunt object...only we\'re throwing the objects in the air ourselves! Sort of like the red neck that shoots an arrow straight into the air and then turn around and run. Like that, except nobody\'s running...well almost nobody.
This crap couldn\'t be happening at a worse time either. The job market for things I like to do isn\'t exactly welcoming in this area. Its getting harder and harder to stand by and yell, \"Heads up!\" when I see something coming because I know its falling on deaf ears. Not exactly sure why, but nobody really seems to care that we\'re in the middle of some big changes within the company and that our department isn\'t making squat for cash. We\'ve got two \"academics\" at the helm, and only one of which has ever really used the technology. Together, they\'re steering us in directions that make absolutely no sense. They\'re wantint to move our hosting off to a third party such as \"Textdrive\" which, while I can see their point, it really doesn\'t make sense considering we have our own hosting facility and would have full control over that environment. Instead, we\'re basically a \"reseller\" for Textdrive (which doesn\'t have a reseller plan, but I digress...) and therefore, while its only $60 bucks a month, we spending money that we could be collecting.
Outside of that, as I\'ve ranted numerous times before, we throwing Rails at everything that comes through the door, unless the customer requires otherwise. I think we\'re really screwing up here. We\'re take a risk to change how we program, how our team works, etc but we\'re not willing to take a risk and beef up our hosting instead kill it off?!?
I remember a few months back...we were about to make a horrible decision, (again, I\'ve gone on and on about this) and I strongly recommended against it...nobody heeded my warning...and we screwed the proverbial pooch. I\'d like to think I am overreacting a bit, but I really don\'t think I am, which basically leaves me with 3 options:
- Stay put...and watch the glorius sinking of the S.S. Client Services, thereby drowning with its captain and first-mate
- Stay put but try to get moved out to Staff Augmentation...dear GOD no!
- Start looking...
These all have their own risks associated with them and when you\'ve got a family to feed and clothe, the choice you make is a monumental one. Its a choice that I am having one HELLUVA time making. I think I\'ve pretty much worn out my welcome with Skipper and Gilligan, (or the ambiguously gay duo as I like to call them), since I like to challenge the dumb decisions being made, but why should I move when they\'re the ones doing dumb things? I guess the answer is, \"...since they\'re driving the boat and I\'m a mere passenger its ride along or go for a swim.\" Too damn bad I didn\'t bring my floaties...
SIDENOTE: Having mentioned Skipper and Gilligan, I am forced to ponder who the other characters match up to...I think, in all honesty...Mary Ann fits my role...nobody listens to her, and really is a minor/forgettable character on the island. We already have a professor...maybe I can get (Andy to be Ginger...
