While I spent most of yesterday out a a client site doing some very basic point and click work, I did come away at the end of the day feeling better. This is entirely due to the fact that, at least out there, I am somebody who can offer an opinion and have it actually considered! Imagine that?
In between certain click-fests, I\'d get asked questions about using CSS for layout instead of tables, AJAX, PHP, etc. And the amazing thing was, I got listened to. Thats not usually something that happens around here very often. More often than not, I am met with a quasi-\"hmmmm, I\'m pondering it\" look, followed by a nod then nothing. It was nice for once to feel like I am adding value. It was almost nice enough that I\'d almost half consider the quasi-job offer tossed out. It wasn\'t anything official, but it was mentioned. I have no intention of following up with that as its a nearly 100% M$ shop and its sort of \"corporate-like\" but nonetheless, it was encouraging.
I think I struck a chord with them when I mentioned that they should drop table-design all together and start heading toward CSS-based layouts. I showed them some typical HTML source with nested tables and then showed them an even more complex layout that was built with CSS/XHTML and they were surprised at how clean the code was when compared to a table-based site. I think they\'re going to move forward in that direction with future design and its nice to think I had a part in that.
On a side note, I\'ve been working on a rewrite for this site and its nearly done. I hope to have it up by the end of the week assuming I haven\'t done anything that my hosting provider can\'t support. I suppose we\'ll see. Its more Web 2.0-ish, cleaner and should be alot easier to read. UNFORTUNATELY, the content won\'t be any more interesting...sorry. :)
